The White Spring Vision

It is one of the greatest mysteries of the Isle of Avalon that two springs with such different qualities should rise from within the Tor. One is touched with red iron, the other with white calcite. They rise within a few feet of each other at the foot of the Glastonbury Tor, the 'Holiest Earthe in England'.

The White Spring water flows through the Wellhouse, a magnificent Victorian reservoir of stone and brick built under the side of the Tor. Also flowing through this enigmatic place is the Michael Line, one of the principal Ley Lines in the country. It's interior consists of three domed vaults 16ft high with beautiful bowed floors - like the hull of a boat moored at the portal to the Otherworld. Two wide archways cut through supporting walls create an interesting Labyrinth like space. Small skylights let in a little natural light but the space can be made a place of utter blackness or lit only by candlelight. With its constant temperature and the sound of the perpetually flowing water it is a unique place.

In the past three years the Companions of the White Spring, guided by Spirit, have transformed the Wellhouse into a sacred sanctuary. The consecrations are to Our Lady of Avalon, the King of the Realm of Faerie, Brigid, Michael, and Peace. The Circle of Companions consist of Helpers, Keepers, crafts people, experts, the Custodian, and the owner. We give our time and resources for free, united in our love of the place. The Wellhouse is open 5 afternoons every week and some evenings as required. Many groups, pilgrims, and local people - from a wide diversity of backgrounds and traditions - have come to appreciate the blessings of the place. As we believe that the Sacred is to be freely shared, no one is charged for entry or use.

Our Plans
In Autumn 2008 all the partitions, floors, tanks, pipes and paint that have been installed in the last 30 years will be removed. The intention is to free the Spring Water so it may flow freely and beautifully through the sanctuary and the courtyard outside. The water enters the building through it's top corner and will fall spectacularly to the floor below. It will then flow as a stream through a series of pools in a simple, elegant and natural form. Most importantly, the water will run free after being constrained for a generation. The shrines that have become established and cherished will be recreated and enhanced. Wherever possible, materials used will be natural, reclaimed, and local.

A technique will be employed to jet blast the paint from the walls, which uses only grit and water. An imposing solid door made of reclaimed oak, gates of wrought iron, are to be made for the main entrance and also for the doorway into the courtyard. Work will begin in the middle of September so we can reopen for Samhain at the end of October, the Celtic New Year. The Wellhouse will be closed for four to six weeks.

This is only phase one. We also have a subsequent phase within which a much more sophisticated water flow will be designed and installed. An upper chamber and galleries within the building will be constructed and the courtyard made into a magical water garden. This will take two to three years to design and build so it will be completed by 2012.
